How old wood floor stains all over the dog urine stains affect? I clearcoat?

Topic created by StarCat: How will staining an old wood floor affect the dog pee stains all over it? can I clearcoat?

The hardwood is a honey color, and I like it. The roomies want a dark stain, but I was concerned about how the stain would take considering the floor is 30 years old, and now has tackstrip holes (know of any wood filler that will absorb the stain, also?) and a ton of old discolored dog pee stains and other imperfections. I don’t want to bleach the rest of the floor, but I haven’t sanded yet, either, so we’ll see how well they come up. Also, the floor doesn’t really “meet” the wall, and there is marble tile that surrounds the floor that is at least a half inch higher. I don’t wanna remove the tile, so are there any good solutions to a way to make that look better?

Sand down. Use Pecan-nut to rub the deeper markings. (yes real nuts)

Decide after that what to do. Most urine stain should be gone.

Wood will retain it’s ‘colorful history’. You better get used to it…or better yet learn to love it. Honey will look amazing on that floor.

1. I haven’t found a wood filler yet that will take stain exactly like the surrounding wood – ignore the tack-strip holes

2. those pee stains will be about 69,000 times more visible when stained – sanding down to fresh wood would be your best bet, buuut… that would leave you needing to do so uniformly everywhere wood ways Use Pecan urine stains proper over meet floor clearcoat affect How old wood floor stains all over the dog urine stains affect? um

perhaps there is a solvent available somewhere that will attack old urine….

as for that place where tile sticks up farther

is it ugly? just a blunt edge of tile sticking up 1/2″?

maybe some small quarter-round stained like the floor, or perhaps some prettier type of moulding?

My brother does wood floors for a living and the pee stains will show up as a dark spot or area, they do have wood bleach but the floor has to have the finish sanded off first, i think its peroxide based and you might have to do a few applications to get it lightened. Clear polyurethane is your best bet to hide stuff like that.If you stain it shows all the flaws in the wood more . The proper procedure is sand with rough grit, then sand with a finer grit, then screen the job with a floor (orbital) maintainer to get out fine sand marks, shop vac, tack cloth floor, apply stain if you want, let dry for a day.Apply polly first coat, let dry for a day, screen first coat with a fine grit screen, shop vac and tac cloth.Apply second coat and finally your done (third coat is optional) but you have to screen between coats always.
