The Catholic church follows the bible, not everyone’s interpretation of it..but it does follow the bible.

So the short answer is: YES

The Long answer: YES, but not how some interpret it to mean. You see, we have to take the ENTIRE bible into consideration not individual verses. Therfore, if you read the bible, look at Jewish culture, then you realize things are a bit more complex then merely the man being essentially a dictator, which are how many people INTERPRET the verses regarding men’s roles.

You see, the bible ALSO teaches to love one another, to serve one another. These verses STILL apply to the head of the household. Jesus is ALSO suppose to serve as a role model. Therefore, again, Jesus’s example and his teachings STILL apply to the head of the household.

Looking back at Jewish tradition.. Masters, had as much responsibility to their servants as the servants had to them. – Bringing this idea forward.. we see that a Catholic man, has as much responsibility to his family, as they do to him, even more, actually.

IF the man is the “head” then he has a responsibility to solicit advice, create consensus and ultimately take responsibility if anything goes wrong. His job is to NOT look out for himself, which is selfish and violates all sorts of concepts in the bible, but instead, self-less, or act in everyone else’s best interest.

You could say that being the head… means he comes LAST… in a way.

There can be only 1 Captain of the ship, otherwise the ship runs a ground, BUT, the Captain has to keep everyone happy, or else they will mutiny.

Same goes for the head of household. — He has to balance all the needs of the individual members of his household if he expects them to follow him. Who would follow an egotistical jerk who only looks out for themselves? – RIGHT?

A KEY piece of evidence to support this idea is looking back at how the bible describes the wife. I don’t have the exact Hebrew words in front of me, but essentially the word used for Wife is roughly (very roughly) translated as “helpmate” — a better translation is “one that you can not live without” or “your own appendage” The bible makes the wife SOOO important.. the man can’t live without her. He is crippled at best, and dead or useless at the worse, without his wife.

A man would be an IDIOT to not consult his wife..after all, he can not live without her..right?

So if he is unable to function properly without her.. it only makes sense that he love her, care for her, look out for her needs FIRST, and consult her whenever possible. RIGHT?

IF the husband is doing ALL that (getting concensus, asking her opinion, looking out for everyone, loving her, putting his needs last, etc. ) WHAT could she POSSIBLY have to object to? Most of the time he is probably doing what she wants him to anyways. When he is NOT, he is probably still doing what is best.

This is the context that the Catholic church teaches the bible verses which say that men are to be the head of household and the women are to obey.
