How much is the cost How much to change the name of the company?

Real question by PorquePine: How much does it cost to change a company’s name?

I recently started a portapotty rental service called “Choo Choo Book-A-Loo.” The problem is, people keep calling thinking we are a male escort service. When I try to explain, there is even more confusion because they tell me they are fine meeting “Lou” in a bathroom. How much would it cost to get a typical business rebranded?

That depends on your state and your structure. If you have a corporation or LLC, check on your Secretary of State’s website for the fee for amending your articles (“Article Amendment,” “Certificate of Amendment,” or similar terminology). No idea what state you’re in — Minnesota charges $ 35 for an article amendment, if that helps.

If you’re a DBA, on the other hand, you might not be able to do this. DBAs are filed at either the state or county level, depending on what state you’re in — find out if you’re able to amend your name, if you have to dissolve and refile, or if you have to just refile again and let the old business die.

(Also…I might be horribly naive, but I can’t imagine what about your name would make anyone think you’re a male escort service. Book-A-Loo sounds to me like a great place to literally book a loo — personally, I think your name’s fine as it is!)

Absolutely nothing. There is no law that requires you to pay to change the name of your company. Just start advertising with a new name.

On September 14-15, 2011, Ambassador Scot Marciel traveled to Bandung, West Java to promote the business and education pillars of the U.S. – Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership. While in Bandung, Ambassador Marciel met with business, education, and government leaders in addition to students at two universities. One of the several highlights of the visit was the signing of an agreement offering U.S. funds to support further business opportunities with PT Kereta Api Indonesia. The agreement provides funding for a technical assistance program that will help meet PT KAI’s plans for expansion due to greater rail demand. [U.S. State Dept.]
