Just tell her straight. She is your employee, she’s not doing you a favour, so you have a right to agree a plan of how you would like things to be. If you skirt around the issue and act embarrassed then she will pick up on that and either exploit it or be left wondering what she is doing wrong.


Start off by asking her for an update of how she thinks your child is doing in certain areas, whether she has any concerns she would like to raise, how she incorporates learning through play at the moment, etc. That then gives you an opportunity to state how you would like to see things change, as well as what you’re happy with at the current level.

Not at all. Almost everyone has a performance elevation at their jobs. Your child care provider shouldn’t take offence. You just need to be up front with her. Tell her she is doing a great job but you would like her to implement more structured learning time and less free play time.
