What do I do if my senior colleagues to ask why you quiet?

Dilemma from Ken: What should you do if a senior colleague asks you why you are so quiet?

A colleague asks you within a team meeting “Why are you only working, not laughing or saying a single joke? Why do you keep to yourself and only working? It doesn’t hurt to laugh once in a while..”

What should you say?

I would say:

“I’m enjoying myself and I’m listening, but my personality is to be less vocal unless I have something concrete to contribute. I would not want people to misunderstand though, so I’ll make an effort to be more demonstrative.”

It sounds like this guy was giving you a warning. Now, it is totally OK to have a quiet personality, but obviously your bosses want workers who are not quiet. Being quiet is often perceived as a problem in some workplaces. So you should start making an effort to participate more so you keep your job.

For example, laugh and smile in meetings, ask people how they are. Say good morning and goodbye. Suggest ideas. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, but do try to participate more. The more you do it, the easier it will get. Good luck.

Depends.

Did you think the joke was funny?

If you didn’t tell them it wasn’t funny or tell them you have a lot on your mind or you don’t care for stupid jokes and maybe you could just tell them you had to stay focus in order to do your work.

Photo showing a conceptual view of a mariculture and sea-farming system, which can be varied in configuration. Such systems would be used to cultivate and raise fish and other forms of marine life to help meet the nutritional needs of the world’s people. Capable of cultivating a great variety of marine life, these structures would be equipped to permit the free flow of water throughout the system. They are designed to be a non-contaminating, integral part of the marine environment.
