It could be used both ways.

I like your interpretation of the “meat” market. :]

I think it’s techincally “meet”, but your explanation proves that either or could work.

I actually like the first one better.

I suppose it could be either, couldn’t it?

It is properly “meat market” as it is extending the concept of, well, a meat market. Once the beef, etc. has been slaughtered and prepared it’s ready for sale. Traditionally the meat is openly displayed for the local butchers, restauranteurs, and others who need a lot of meat gather and bid on the cuts.

So, by extension, girls (and guys) put on skimpy clothing and put their “wares” on display for the locals to inspect and bid on.

because people meet there.

I’ve never seen it written, but I understand that it is a play on words and since you’re not going to a butcher shop I would write it as “meet market”

it used to be “meat market” – a crass explanation for a crass situation, but i can see how in today’s vernacular “meet market” would be very appropriate. however, just by adding the word market to meet makes it slightly crass to me. so i guess you would have to get the meaning from the context in which it’s used. and don’t be embarrassed … not knowing and not seeking the answer is true embarrassment…
